The history of the Cursillo movement
From the island of Mallorca in 1944 to Lorain, Ohio, discover how a powerful encounter with Christ sparked a worldwide Catholic movement that continues to transform local communities today.

The spark in Mallorca: Eduardo Bonnín's vision
In the 1940s on the island of Mallorca, Spain, founder Eduardo Bonnín was moved by a profound love for Jesus Christ and a desire to bring people closer to Him. Recognizing the deep hunger for authentic faith among young men preparing for a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, he and a small group of faithful believers developed the "Cursillos in Christianity" (short courses in Christianity).
Their purpose was simple yet revolutionary: to bring everyday people to a genuine friendship with Christ, empowering them to return to their normal environments and reshape the world with the Gospel.

Arriving in Ohio: The Sacred Heart Chapel story
After spreading across Spain and reaching the United States via Waco, Texas, in the late 1950s, the movement caught the attention of a visionary parish priest at Sacred Heart Chapel in Lorain, Ohio. He selected Hispanic men from the parish to travel to Waco, Texas, where they experienced their first Cursillo weekend.
Transformed by their encounters, these men returned to Lorain with a renewed zeal, followed by a second cohort. Together with their priest, they launched the Cursillo movement in Lorain. As generations grew, younger family members who had not mastered Spanish needed an accessible way to experience this life-changing weekend. Faithful parishioners stepped forward to launch the bilingual Lorain Spanish/English Speaking Cursillo movement, uniting families across generations in Elyria and Lorain.

Everyday apostles answering Christ's call
Over the decades, the three-day weekend has strengthened Catholics to fulfill their baptismal calling. With parish priests stretched beyond what they can physically sustain, men and women of our movement embrace the responsibility of everyday evangelization.
Jesus calls each of us to proclaim the Gospel through our daily lives—in our families, workplaces, and neighborhoods. Through our ongoing Fourth Day community, we encourage one another to let Christ's love radiate through every circle of influence we touch.
"Christ is counting on you, and we are counting on Him every single day in the circles where we live, work, and pray."
